Residential Remodels and Rennovations
Many architectural firms begin their practice with residential remodeling and smaller renovation projects. Often, this work is left behind as larger project commissions are developed. At PHA, this residential work remains a valued and viable project type. It allows the architects to work closely with homeowners that have a personal investment in the successful outcome of the project. It is satisfying and stimulating work, helping individuals realize their goals for their living environment. Each project is an individual design challenge that may be a simple matter of problem solving, or may allow a broader, more conceptual design statement that revitalizes and restores life to an existing home.

213 Murray Hill Avenue
The owners of this home desired an update to the existing home that better fit their more modern lifestyle. Use of existing materials such as siding, concrete, and metal railings in new and innovative forms creates an individual and interesting statement within the neighborhood. Ribbon windows in both horizontal and vertical planes create varied and complex spaces within the residence. By adding to the rear of the structure and using the slight rise of the lot as an asset, the 2nd floor addition is almost masked from the street, helping to keep the much larger remodeled home in scale with the surrounding smaller homes.

Lindsley Residence
The project involved a two-story addition to an existing home in the Noble Park area of Atlanta. The addition provided a new kitchen/family room area and, on the second story, a master bedroom/bathroom suite. Because the owners wanted a kitchen as an integral part of the family room, the two areas open to each other. To reinforce the relationship between the two spaces, the kitchen cabinets and counters were designed as individual elements of furniture. The kitchen won a design award from Atlanta Homes magazine. The master bath was published in Better Homes and Gardens magazine. The owners say the house is both exciting and very livable -- a goal we strive for with our work.

Jacobs Residence
The interior remodel of this classic Druid Hills home yielded an award winning kitchen. A master bedroom suite was created, including a carefully disguised home office. The basement remodel included the development of a children’s media center and family room. The rear yard became a formal entertaining garden. Exterior work was handled with the greatest sensitivity toward the historic character and quality of this home. At both the front and rear of the home, it is difficult to distinguish the existing face brick and windows from the newly added elements.

Janssen Residence
A 1950’s custom ranch style home was completely remodeled by the architects from the foundation to the roof. The floor plan was reworked to accommodate the life style of the new homeowners and included a media room, library and a home office. Bathrooms and bedrooms were relocated and remodeled and a custom kitchen was designed and installed. The home was truly transformed and has been presented on “Before and After”, a nationally broadcast home improvement program.
